„The Brex“
The railway line from Engers to Siershahn was opened on 30 May 1884, a masterpiece of engineering at the time. Due to its outstanding route with seven tunnels, 30 bridges and viaducts and the beauty and unspoilt nature of the surrounding landscape, it quickly gained a legendary reputation. Individual motorisation and rationalisation measures at DB ultimately led to the closure of the Brexbachtalbahn in 1995 and the tracks fell into a deep sleep.
In 2007, the ‘Brexbachtalbahn e.V.’ association was founded with the aim of reactivating the ‘most beautiful branch line in Germany’ and using it for tourism. Just in time for the 125th anniversary of the line on 30 May 2009, the first section from Siershahn to the idyllically situated Grenzau railway station was reopened to the public.
